COUNCILOR STEVENSON RESPONDS TO GAY PARADE

Hi All!

COUNCILOR TIM STEVENSON RESPONDS TO PARADE ROUTE CONCERN

Hi All!

Listed below is an email from Councilor Tim Stevenson to a constituent. Of course I added my thoughts. See the post from Tim Stevenson to Rick Forde.

Mr Stevenson obviously doesn't get this. Why he would say that city staff are listening only to a small group of people when this involves at least 500,000 people. It involves a community and due process and Mr Stevenson should know better to articulate that this is a fair process. Obviously, the PRIDE society hasn't consulted the people and this is the problem - jamie lee.

Dear Mr. Forde,

It would be important for you to be in contact directly with the Pride Society. They are an elected board and have told the City staff they wish permits to hold a Parade in Yaletown rather than the Westend this July. If the community is not in favour of this route they must let the Pride Society know they don't want the change. The City Staff are only responding to a duly elected board as they have every year before. This is scheduled to come before Council on March 31st.

Sincerely,

Tim Stevenson

POPULAR SOCIAL HOSTESS OFFER HER THOUGHTS ON GAY ROUTE

Hi Friends!

Another strong voice from the Community offers her thoughts on gay parade route - see post below - Jamie Lee

POPULAR SOCIAL HOSTESS OFFERS HER THOUGHTS ON GAY ROUTE

I hope we can all come together on this, as I for one am not in support of
the move and wish that all of us as a community would have been consulted on
this. Lets not forget that although PRIDE does do good work, their success
would not be complete without us; the COMMUNITY.

Please forward this and make your voice heard

Sincerely;

GAY PARADE DEBATE CONTINUES

GAY PARADE DEBATE CONTINUES

Hi All!

Posted below is an email, I received from a prominant member of the gay community. I think Mike sums up best what is actually going on with the parade route. Please email councilors tim.stevenson@vancouver.ca or ellen.woodsworth@vancouver.ca and express your concern.

Jamie Lee

Hi Jamie Lee:

I certainly agree with you that there should be some better (if any at all) community input on this issue. What leaves me scratching my head is if a copy of the press release was sent to Xtra West BEFORE they went to print, or after. Since the paper comes out tomorrow, it may be that they have had a chance to cover it. On the other hand, the timing of the release may be such that they just missed the deadline, and this information on the route change will not get out to the community for another 2 weeks, which in my books is a pretty crafty way of getting around community input.

Curious that the release is dated the 21st . . .

I want to wait to see what happens on that front before I comment publicly on the route itself, and I would like to also know what the real reason for the route change would be -- I suspect it's either that Pride wants the revenue from the beer garden, or a move to make us a bit more invisible in the prime of tourist season (perhaps requested by some civic authorities?). I really don't know the insider info on this.

I certainly don't buy the "wheelchair" argument - sidewalks are wheelchair accessible anyway, and if they wanted to do something for people in chairs, they could rope off a section of the route for them specifically. In fact, they should have done that ages ago, anyway.

As to the insult to community history, I do feel that the West End (and Yaletown, for that matter) are both sufficiently queerified that one or the other does not matter. What is of more concern is the fact that the new route, with the exception of the blocks between Drake and Cambie are primarily industrial or construction, and not residential. There are no merchants to support the crowd needs (food, seating, toilets, baby changing areas, and so on), and if the weather is yucky, not much shelter either. The Denman and Davie merchants depend on revenues from the parade watchers, and I think it is an insult to them to move it after all these years of support.

Additionally, if the real concern is that there is not enough room for the crowds, it would make more sense to lengthen the parade route, by starting it further north - i.e. at Georgia, and block off part of the east bound part of the exit from the park for set-up and so on. Alternatively, it could start IN the park, and then work its way along Georgia and then onto Denman.

Just a few thoughts for now - I'll stay in touch

Love,

Mike

AN URGENT APPEAL

Hi Friends!

Re New Proposed route for Pride Parade

I've been receiving quite a few calls with concerns
over the new proposed PRIDE parade route.

I'm not sure that the success of PRIDE warrants a move
to an area east of granville which goes through an
area (Yaletown) not known for any gay landmarks.

I suspect there hasn't been enough public input either
regarding the move. PRIDE is about community
participation and community ownership and I'm not
certain the pride board has been responsive to what
the community may desire.

PRIDE organizers are going before the city council on
March 31 to have them approve this new venue change.

Most members of the gay community don't even know
about this proposed change.

I think its important to have a community meeting
before the city council meeting with both sides having
an opportunity to present arguments for and against.

The Community at all costs must be Consulted.

I have asked the PRIDE president Shawn to organize a
meeting, however, I'm not certain she will.

I think PRIDE should ask council to delay the planned
March 31 meeting until there has been real community
participation and dialogue.

As one who who participated in the first Pride Unity
Week in 1976 and the first parade from Nelson Park in
1979, I feel a real sense of community ownership over
PRIDE. For over 25 years, the parade has been in the
West End neighborhood.

Having the parade route in the Denman Village, a known
gay area has been beneficial to the community as well
as being a huge economic driver for small locally
owned businesses. There are many gay owned businesses
there.

Nearby English Bay and even Lee's Trail are known as
longtime hangout and cruizing areas. The new AIDS
memorial is at Sunset Beach where the parade always
ends. Another positive key aspect of the current
parade route is that it goes right past the Alexandria
bandstand on Beach avenue which has always been the
location where the long running AIDS candlelight vigil
has been held.

Where the proposed route is, there is nothing
historical or significant markers for the gay
community.

It starts nowhere, goes through nowhere and ends up
nowhere.

Please make yor voice heard. Council will not act if
they receive emails informing them that there hasn't
been appropriate community consultation. This way, a
decision can be delayed until the community has fully
participated in where it desires its parade to be.

The wonderful thing about the parade has been the participation of non gay members as well. A parade is a parade and everyone loves a good parade!

So if you have enjoyed the parade, please make your views known.
